Hathi Trust HathiTrust is a partnership of major research institutions and libraries working to ensure that the cultural record is preserved and accessible long into the future. The mission of HathiTrust is to contribute to research, scholarship, and the common good by collaboratively collecting, organizing, preserving, communicating, and sharing the record of human knowledge.  
OAPEN Library  The OAPEN Library contains freely accessible academic books, mainly in the area of humanities and social sciences. OAPEN works with publishers to build a quality controlled collection of open access books, and provides services for publishers, libraries and research funders in the areas of deposit, quality assurance, dissemination, and digital preservation. 
Open Library   The Open Library is a child site of the massive Internet Archive. The Open Library allows you to browse and discover an incredible number of e-books that can be downloaded and/or checked out as if you were in a physical library. According the vision page of the site, "The ultimate goal of the Open Library is to make all the published works of humankind available to everyone in the world." Create a free account to be able to create your own bookshelves and to-be-read lists. 
Open Textbook Library   The Open Textbook Library provides a growing catalog of free, peer-reviewed, and openly-licensed textbooks.  
Project Gutenberg

Project Gutenberg offers over 56,000 free eBooks: Choose among free epub books, free kindle books, download them or read them online. You will find the world's great literature here, especially older works for which copyright has expired.

ARTSTOR   An arts and multimedia collection encompassing 1,000,000+ images that are freely available to the public! You have the option to view, download, and compare images in the collection.  
ArXiv  Open access to 1,349,224 e-prints in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Quantitative Biology, Quantitative Finance, Statistics, Electrical Engineering and Systems Science, and Economics.
Bio Med Central (BMC)  A pioneer of open access publishing, BMC has an evolving portfolio of high quality peer-reviewed journals including broad interest titles such as BMC Biology and BMC Medicine, specialist journals such as Malaria Journal and Microbiome, and the BMC series. 
Cambridge Open Access   The Cambridge University Press provides access to 20,000+ open source, peer-reviewed articles. 
The Clute Institute   A collection of open access journals covering a variety of academic disciplines.   
CORE  CORE aggregates open source article repositories from around the world to create an intuitive, one-stop-shop of high quality information and research articles. CORE currently facilitates access to over 135 million articles.  
Digital Public Library of America  DPLA connects people to the riches held within America’s libraries, archives, museums, and other cultural heritage institutions. All of the materials found through DPLA—photographs, books, maps, news footage, oral histories, personal letters, museum objects, artwork, government documents, and so much more—are free and immediately available in digital format.  
Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ)  Contains ca. 10000 open access journals covering all areas of science, technology, medicine, social science and humanities. 
EconBiz  Scholarly publications in economics and business studies. 
ERIC   ERIC, the Education Research Information Center, provides access to education literature and resources.  
EThOS  EThOS is the UK’s national thesis service which aims to maximize the visibility and availability of the UK’s doctoral research theses. It demonstrates the quality of UK research, and supports the UK Government’s open access principle that publications resulting from publicly-funded research should be made freely available for all researchers, providing opportunities for further research. 
Film-Philosophy  An open access journal published by Edinburgh University Press. Dedicated to the engagement between film studies and philosophy

Google Newspapers  Google has worked with newspapers to digitize materials via the News Archive Partner Program. The date to which these newspapers go back varies by newspaper, but many go back to the mid-19th century, and some even earlier. 
International Journal of Communication  The International Journal of Communication is an online, multi-media, academic journal that adheres to the highest standards of peer review and engages established and emerging scholars from anywhere in the world. 
International Journal of Psychological Studies (IJPS)  International Journal of Psychological Studies (IJPS) is a double-blind peer-reviewed journal, published by the Canadian Center of Science and Education. The journal is published in both printed and online version. The online version is free access and download. 
Library of Congress  The LoC facilitates access to over 8,000 historical and contemporary newspapers. Many of the items are pre 1900s, including some that from the 1700s!
MDPI Open Access  MDPI is one of the leading peer-reviewed open access Publishers. It was founded by researchers in Basel, Switzerland in 1996. 
Media Industries  Media Industries is a peer-reviewed, open access journal that supports critical studies of media industries, institutions, and policies worldwide. 
Medline Plus   MedlinePlus is the National Institutes of Health's Web site for patients and their families and friends. Produced by the National Library of Medicine, the world’s largest medical library, it brings you information about diseases, conditions, and wellness issues in language you can understand.
PGDT Open   A collection of open access dissertations and graduate theses hosted by ProQuest. 
PLOS has been a force for transformation in scholarly publishing, breaking with archaic traditions from previous generations. Key innovations include the acceleration of science and medicine, from research discovery to influence tracking.
